Delcambre wins its homecoming game

DELCAMBRE- Homecoming was just as good of a time as any for the Delcambre Panthers to get back on track in dominating fashion with a 28-0 victory over Jeanerette.
A second half explosion propelled Delcambre (4-4, 2-1) to the easy win.
“In the first half, we would have long drives, get to the 30 and we couldn’t get in,” said head coach Darcy Delcambre. “I think we settled down in the second half. We had to work hard in the second half to take advantage of the opportunities. We played a little better.”
It took less than a minute for the Panthers to score in the game.
After a good opening kickoff return and a personal foul penalty on the Tigers, Bubba Latiolais was able to hit paydirt from 25 yards out on a run up the middle to give Delcambre a 7-0.
The scoring ceased for the rest of the half, with penalties and turnovers by both teams plaguing the game. Jeanerette had a bevy of penalties in first half, accounting for over a football field worth of yardage.
“In the first half, we had over 110 yards worth of penalties,” said Jeanerette head coach Ananias Johnson. “It was just stupid mistakes. You can’t win a game like that. We played very undisciplined.”
Offense struck again for Delcambre in the third quarter. After a 1-yard punt by the Tigers, the Panthers got the ball on the Jeanerette 10-yard line.

Two plays later, Oliver Nunez was able to get in the endzone on a 7-yard run to give his team a two-score lead.
Delcambre was able to tack another score on before the fourth quarter on a 12-yard reception on a faked halfback toss throwback screen from Zachary Trahan to a wide open Latiolais with 16.7 seconds left in the third.
Nunez scored the last points of the game with a 26-yard run with 7:16 left in the game.
Delcambre’s defense smothered Jeanerette all night. Jeanerette finished the game with 122 total yards, and struggled to cross midfield for the majority of the game.
“Our defense has always played well,” said coach Delcambre. “We had a goal not to give up big plays, and it was a plus for us that we did not give up any big plays.”
Aside from a stout Delcambre defense, penalties marred the game for Jeanerette. The team finished with 16 penalties for 155 yards.
“I tell my kids all the time that it starts in school,” said Johnson. “You have to be disciplined in school and carry it to the field. Once you do that, we’ll be all right.”
Nunez was the leading rusher for the Panthers with 126 yards. Latiolais chipped in with 95 yards on 16 attempts.
Delcambre is at home next week against district rival, the 7-1 Opelousas Catholic Vikings.
