Abbeville City Council wants to change qualifications for parks, rec job

As the Abbeville City Council continues its search for a parks and recreation director, it is looking to tweak some language in regard to requirement for those interested in the job.
The council voted Tuesday during its regular meeting to request that the city’s Municipal Civil Service Board change that a college degree not be required for anyone possibly hired as the parks and rec director.
“The language will read,” Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza said, “that the qualification requirement for parks and recreation director will say college degree preferred, not required.”
The old language reads that a college degree in a parks and recreation field is required.
That change would not open the job up for just anyone outside of the parks and recreation field.
“Experience in recreation programing is required,” Piazza said.
Councilman-at-Large Francis Plaisance said it is a positive step in filling the vacant position.
“It is a good move,” Plaisance said during the meeting. “It is going to allow some of our local people to be qualified for the position.”
Nothing can happen prior to any vote by the civil service board. That board will meet next Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 5 p.m.
