Kaplan man arrested in cyclist hit and run
Two weeks after a man was found dead in a ditch on La. Highway 92, Louisiana State Police have arrested a Kaplan man in connection with the death.
Fitzpatrick F. Doucette, 42, of Kaplan, was arrested on a warrant and charged with negligent homicide, felony hit and run, driving under suspension and limitations on passing bicycles.
He was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Facility.
On July 13, officials believe Doucette was driving a 1997 Lincoln vehicle when he hit Lon Lomas, 30, of Youngsville and then fled the scene. Lomas was riding his bicycle on Highway 92.
According to Kaplan Police Chief Boyd Adams, a few hours after the accident, Kaplan Police received a call from the Louisiana State Police (LSP) requesting they go to Doucette’s home on Foote Street in Kaplan. When officers arrived at his residence, they noticed his vehicle had visible damage.
Doucette was then asked to report to the Kaplan Police Department for questioning by LSP.
After speaking with Doucette, and seizing the vehicle, he was released.
Evidence collected at the scene of the accident and from the vehicle were sent to the state police crime lab.
When testing revealed enough evidence to link the vehicle to the crash, a warrant was obtained for Doucette.
Lomas leaves behind a wife, Alicia and two children, Rylie, 8 and Slaydon, 6.
