Vermilion Parish road being re-named in Allen Bares' honor
Allen Bares Jr.’s name will live on, especially in the eyes of the Vermilion Parish Sheriff Office.
It will live on for them because the Police Jury is expected to vote to rename Savoy Road, the road in front of the Vermilion Parish Law Enforcement Center located south of Abbeville.
The new name is expected to be “Allen Bares Jr. Road.”
The jurors will vote at Monday’s meeting to make it official.
At the Wednesday night Police Jury Committee meeting, Police Juror Kevin Sagrera got the ball rolling to have a Vermilion Parish street named in honor of Bares. Bares was killed last month as he tried to stop a home burglary on South Hospital Drive, south of Abbeville.
Bares was a Sheriff deputy for 12 years and was killed while on his day off.
He left behind Tina, his wife, and two children.
Bares was shot in Sagrera’s district.
Before Sagrera brought up the idea of having a parish street renamed in honor of Bares, he first spoke with Bares’ wife about the idea. Then he met with Sheriff Mike Couvillon and Col. Kirk Frith about what road to rename in honor of Bares.
It was decided that the road in front of the jail will be renamed in honor of Bares.
“I would like to thank Chris Rosa for his wonderful ‘letter to Allen’ in the Sunday newspaper where he mentioned the idea of a road in Vermilion Parish be re-named in honor of our fallen FTO Deputy Allen M. Bares Jr.. Additionally I was very excited when Police Juror Kevin Sagrera called to inform me that he was going to recommend the road near the jail be renamed in Allen’s memory. I applaud our Police Jury for taking this idea and turning it into a reality. It is an example of good government at work and the sharing of sympathy in this tragedy,” said Sheriff Couvillon.”
Col. Kirk Frith, Chief Deputy for the Sheriff’s Office, friend and a pallbearer for the fallen deputy has these comments: “I echo what the Sheriff said and I am extremely happy with the road chosen. Renaming Savoy Road near the parish jail is fitting because our deputies use that road often for obvious reasons and they will be reminded of FTO Deputy Allen M. Bares Jr’s presence each time they travel it.”
Sagrera did not have a time table as to when the new name will go into effect. He said he has to contact 911 to begin the name change.
