Fire destroys car belonging to Abbeville Councilman Landry’s son
Fire destroyed a vehicle belonging to the son of Abbeville Councilman Wayne Landry early Monday morning.
Landry said the car went ablaze shortly after midnight on Monday.
How the fire started remains under investigation. Landry said that investigation is being conducted by the Abbeville Police Department, Abbeville Fire Department and the fire marshal from Lafayette.
“The substation on Maude Avenue is right there,” Landry said, “so the Abbeville Fire Department got there just in time, before it could spread.
“The car is a total loss.”
Javion Joseph, Landry’s son, had the vehicle, a 2009 Pontiac, parked in his driveway on Felicity Street. Someone passing by noticed smoke and flames coming from the vehicle.
“They called 911,” Landry said. “A neighbor living behind the house got in to wake my son up, to tell him the car was on fire.
“I live a block from there, so the car was still on fire when I got there.”
Again, officials are investigating the incident. Landry said he has his suspicions as to how the fire started. He said a discharged firework was located near the vehicle’s gas tank.
“I feel like something happened,” Landry said. “We are going to let them investigate this.”
Landry asked that if anyone may have seen something in the area, to please contact the Abbeville Police Department at 893-2511.
“This happened in the heart of my district,” said Landry, who represents Abbeville’s District D. “It is very frustrating. There is too much crime.
“It is very ridiculous and needs to stop.”
