ATC cracks down on 3 Kaplan businesses

Agents with the state Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control issued 331 violations in the first month of the agency’s 2014 summer crackdown on underage alcohol and tobacco sales.
Of those violations, 211 were for alcohol sales to minors and 120 were for tobacco sales to minors.
Vermilion Parish had three stores that were cited for either underage alcohol and tobacco sales.
Cited in Kaplan were: Food N Fun No. 19 on 118 East Veteran’s Memorial Drive; Econo Mart No. 5 on Herpin Street and Northside Exxon on 206 East 11th Street.
No business in Maurice, Gueydan, Abbeville or Erath were cited.
Since the summer crackdown began on June 2, agents have conducted more than 2,400 compliance checks on businesses throughout the state that sell and/or serve alcohol and tobacco.
In 2013, agents conducted a total of 3,000 compliance checks over a three month period and they are working to more than double that number this year.
ATC Commissioner Troy Hebert said 85 percent of businesses checked have been in compliance with state law.
“That’s good news,” he said. “We just need to focus on the 15% that continue to violate the law.”
Businesses caught selling alcohol or tobacco to underage persons are subject to criminal and administrative charges and face fines and penalties that could result in suspension or revocation of their alcohol and tobacco permits.
