Five AC units stolen from old health unit in Abbeville
Someone stole five air conditioning units that were on the outside of the old health unit in Abbeville.
The police jury, which owns the building, was informed at Wednesday’s committee meeting that three units were taken. A police jury employee drove by the building recently and noticed the cover of the units flipped upside down along side of the closed building. The employee stopped and discovered the units were gone.
The building has been empty for at least five years.
The police jury employee reported the theft to the Abbeville Police and then informed the police jurors at Wednesday’s committee meeting about the theft. The jury agreed to get an estimate to replace the three units.
Well, on Thursday, police juror Wayne Touchet drove by the old health unit, on - St. Charles Street, to check out the missing AC units. He walked along side of the building and then he walked in the back of the building. That is when he discovered two more units in the back were taken.
One unit was, however, left in place in the back of the building.
Now the police jury is looking into the replacement cost of five outside units.
To replace all five units is estimated to be around $25,000. The Police Jury has a $10,000 deductible on its insurance policy.
Once the jury gets an estimate to replace the units, it will decide if it wants to put five new units.
If the jury does vote to replace the units, Touchet said a fence is going to have to be built to protect the units or security cameras will have to be placed around the building.
If not, there is a good chance they will be stolen again, he said.
