Abbeville police warn of scam dealing with not paying electricity

The Abbeville Police Department is continuing to receive complaints in reference to electricity scams.
The scammers are contacting citizens and businesses of Abbeville through telephone calls using 1-800 numbers demanding payment for overdue bills, threatening to shut off electricity.
Please don’t fall for this scam, the police are advising.
Please be informed for residences, the City of Abbeville will first send a letter demanding payment.
If the bill is not paid in a timely fashion, the electricity will be shut off.
For businesses, a letter will be sent prior to a phone call from a City Employee, but the phone number will not be from a 1-800 number. Another way to identify the scam, is the scammers will want a payment over the phone or mailed to an out of state address, not to an Abbeville Address (City Hall).
