Three Abbeville City Councilmen went against Mayor's recommendation for the first time in 12 years

Last week a historical thing happened to Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza when the city council voted 3-2 not to rehire the Abbeville Parks and Recreation Director Jerry Smith. Three city councilmen went against Piazza’s recommendation to continue the employment of Smith.
Councilmen Francis Plaisance, Joe Hardy and Wayne Landry voted not to rehire Smith as the parks director after the council and
Piazza spoke about Smith in executive session.
When the group came out of executive session, Piazza gave his recommendation and the council voted. Plaisance, Hardy and Landry voted against the Mayor’s recommendation, while councilmen Francis Touchet and Brady Broussard Jr. voted in favor of the Mayor’s decision.
Mayor Piazza told the residents who gathered at the Abbeville library on Friday that in the 12 years he has been mayor, not once did the city council go against his recommendation.
If you do the math, that is 68 straight times the city council voted on what Piazza’s recommended.
That streak is now over.
