Abbeville Kiwanis Club recognizes Harrington as Student of the Month

Jace Harrington’s Kaplan High School career will come to an end when he graduates on May 16.
Harrington, 18, will have made the most of his time at the school when that day finally arrives. He is the senior class president, has maintained a perfect 4.0, and runs both track and cross country. He will have also completed a total of 15 college credit hours by the time this school year ends.
“I’ve been very busy,” Harrington told members of the Abbeville Kiwanis Club Tuesday afternoon.
The Kiwanians invited Harrington to their weekly meeting to present him the “Student of the Month” award. Along with a sign that will be placed at the school, Harrington received a gift card to Sonic in Abbeville.
“It does feel good,” Harrington said of the recognition. “I was really surprised.”
The honor shouldn’t come as a shock to those who know Harrington. Mary Pat Lachaussee, a teacher and senior class sponsor at Kaplan High, said she certainly isn’t surprised.
“He has had many highlights during his Kaplan High career,” Lachaussee told the Kiwanians. “He is well deserving.”
Along with his stellar work in the classroom, Harrington is a member of the 4-H program and the
Kaplan High Key Club. He has also helped organize various fundraising projects, including coat and canned food drives, among others.
“I really just try to participate in as much as I can,” Harrington said.
Harrington, the eldest son of Timothy and Clarissa, sets a positive example for his younger siblings, of whom there are seven. The ages range from 18 to 2 years old, with the three older boys (18, 16 and 14) and five younger girls (10, 8, 6, 4 and 2).
Harrington’s plans for after high school center around enrolling at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He plans to major in civil engineering.
“I think that gives me plenty of options,” Harrington said the engineering concentration. “It will give me a general overview engineering and I can see what I want to do from that point.”
