All-Parish basketball team
For the first time in a long time and possibly the first time in the history of the All-Parish team there isn’t just going to be one boys MVP, but this year there is going to be two MVPs.
Devonte Davis of Kaplan and Jordan Windmon of North Vermilion are going to be All-Parish Co-MVPS.
“It feels good,” Davis said. “To know that people have recognized my hard work, and that I go out there and play my heart out. It feels good to get that award. I feel like all my hard work has paid off.”
Senior Devonte Davis was also named the District 6-3A MVP.
“Devonte is a great player and a great kid to coach,” Kaplan Head Coach Jeff Davis said. “He is a great athlete amongst a bunch of other great athletes. He is a hard worker that does everything he can to win a game. He is never late, never misses a practice. Along with that he is a great leader, and we are going to miss him next year.”
During district play, Davis averaged a double-double. He averaged almost 18 points and 12 rebounds a game during district play.
“My team just puts the ball in my hand,” Davis said. “They trust me to make plays, and I don’t want to let them down. So I just work really hard to make sure that when they do ask me to make a play, I’m ready to make the plays necessary to win the game.”
Davis was also a member of the Kaplan football and track teams, and attributes his play on the court to all the hard work he puts in for every other sport he participates in.
“Training,” Davis said. “Kaylon Rudd actually has the most endurance and stamina of anyone I know, and I just work with him almost everyday. All that work seems to pay off when I need it.”
Davis is a Senior at Kaplan, and he knows how hard it’s going to be to leave Kaplan at the end of the school year, when he is off to college at Grambling University.
“I’m going to miss Kaplan a lot,” Davis said. “I was talking about it the other day. I may be going to Grambling, but I am going to miss Kaplan. Kaplan football, Kaplan basketball and just everything that Kaplan has to offer I’m going to miss. I love being here, and the atmosphere. It’s just a great place.”
Jordan Windmon of the North Vermilion Patriots is another Co-MVP of Vermilion Parish.
“It feels good,” Windmon said. “I really tried to pick up my game. I had so many different tasks I had to fill. I did the best I could to fill all of those holes. It was just a lot of hard work, but it paid off in the end.”
Windmon was a mainstay for the Patriots defense.
Windmon won this award based on his performance on the court, but particularly on the defensive side of the court.
“I really had to keep my energy up,” Windmon said. “I had to make sure I finished the game as strong as I started the game. Guarding the best player on the other team can be taxing on you, especially when you have to do that and try to step up and fill some holes on the offensive side of the ball as well.
Windmon’s coach, Jack LeBlanc knows just how hard he works, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
“Jordan is our best defensive player,” North Vermilion Head Coach Jack LeBlanc said. “He has the hardest job of guarding the other teams best player, and every single time he was up to the challenge. Even when we lost a couple of key players, and his role changed, he just stepped up his game and played even better. I can’t say enough good things about Jordan.”
Windmon is a junior and is excited to get back on the court next year, but he knows he has to work even harder if he and his Patriots team wants to make it further in the playoff.
“Me and the freshmen players are going to start work for next season this summer,” Windmon said. “We are losing some great players, and they are going to leave a hole. So, for us to play at the same level we did this year is going to be really hard, but we can do it as long as we put in the work.
Both Davis’ Kaplan team and Windmon’s North Vermilion Team faced off a total of four times this past season, and each team won two games.
They split the regular season district match-ups, to lead them both being named Co-District 6-3A Champions, but the Patriots won the most important game, which was the tie breaker game at the end of the season that decided who would get the power ranking point for winning the district.
Both of these kids were deserving of the MVP moniker, and now they can both say they were the 2014 All-Parish MVP.
