Lady Wildcats lose close one
The Abbeville Lady Wildcats softball team started the season off hot.
The Lady Wildcats started their season 7-1 and had winning streaks of three and four games in the process.
Now, after a 4-3 loss to Centerville on Monday night, the Lady Wildcats have their first losing streak of the season.
“We just left too many runners on base,” Lady Wildcats Head Coach Ivy Landry said. “Errors hurt us a lot too. Emily (Schexnayder) pitched a great game. They hit us but the errors we made is what did us in.”
Schexnayder pitched all seven innings for the Lady Wildcats.
In those seven innings, she only allowed eight hits, but because of four errors in the field, Centerville scored four unearned runs.
Schexnayder struck out four batters over the course of the game.
Despite the errors ,the Lady Wildcats still had an opportunity to win the game.
Brandi Pedigo hit a two-run home run to close the gap to 4-2.
The Lady Wildcats also had the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning and were unable to plate any runners.
The bottom of the seventh rolled around, and yet again, the Lady Wildcats had the bases loaded, but were able to score one to close the gap to 4-3.
Unfortunately, the Lady Wildcats would leaves runners on second and third to end the game.
This loss is the third loss for the Lady Wildcats on the season, and their second straight loss.
“Everyone is still positive,” Landry said. “We are playing well enough to win. We just aren’t getting the timely hits and our defense has let us down a couple times this year.
“We are changing the culture here at Abbeville. It’s a long slow process, but I have seen some positives already.”
Caitlyn Hebert was 2-4 from the plate with a single and a double.
Angelle Domingue and Daijah Phillips both went 2-3 from the plate.
Domingue’s both hits were singles, and Phillips had a single and a triple in the game.
The Lady Wildcats offense was able to get 12 hits in the game, but according to coach Landry, “They (hits) just didn’t come at the right time.”
The Lady Wildcats played another game against district rival Notre Dame last night.
That game marked the first of five straight district games the Lady Wildcats would play.
“We know that we are in the toughest district in the state,” Landry said. “We have three top five teams (Notre Dame, North Vermilion and Kaplan) in 3A. We just have to go out there and play hard.
“We think that we are good enough to win. The way we are approaching the district schedule is that they have to come play us, and they should worry about us as well.”
The results of the Notre Dame game can be found in the paper tomorrow.
As for the Lady Wildcats next opponent, they will be traveling to play Kaplan on Thursday.
