Sheriff Couvillon will be honored by Vermilion 4-Hers

The 2014 Vermilion Parish 4-H Achievement Day will be held Saturday at Kaplan High School. The day will be dedicated to Mike Couvillon at the events opening assembly at 8 a.m. Achievement Day is the largest, most important 4-H event of the year.
It involves about 500 4-H’ers from throughout the parish competing in 46 contests and exhibits to demonstrate skills and knowledge gained during the club year.
It is fitting that this important event be dedicated to Couvillon because of his long term support of the 4-H program.
Couvillon began his involvement with 4-H as a 10 year old 4-H member at E. Broussard School. He attended 4-H camp with his sister Kay early on, was a regular participant at Achievement Day and was active in the Electricity Project.
Couvillon has had a long history of supporting 4-H. Throughout his career in law enforcement he never hesitated to make presentations at 4-H meetings on various topics related to drug education and careers. Once elected Sheriff, his support has only grown.
He has served as guest speaker at the 4-H Leader Banquet and has auctioneered at fundraisers to benefit the 4-H Foundation and Junior Leader Club. His support of the 4-H Livestock Project members has been second to none, being named a top three high volume six times during his tenure as sheriff.
He annually allows for inmate labor to set up the Cecil McCrory Exhibit Building for 4-H Livestock Shows.
He provides transportation for 4-H’ers attending Challenge Camp and has judged the Teens Driving Teens Contest. He was instrumental in developing and providing education for the 4-H ATV Safety Program in the parish and has lent his expertise and guidance for the 4-H Shooting Sports Program.
Couvillon is a graduate of the Master Horseman Program and has volunteered as Horse Project Leader at the 4-H Horse Camp and Horse Clinics.
When asked why he chooses to support 4-H to such a high degree, Sheriff Couvillon stated “4-H builds leadership in our young people, teaches them the value of a job well done through competitive events and awards and keeps young people active in constructive activity.
He is the father of four children and belongs to various civic and professional organizations.
Because of his essential and outstanding support and his willingness to lend his talents to the
4-H Program, it is with great gratitude and respect that the 4-H members of Vermilion Parish dedicate the 2014 4-H Achievement Day to Sheriff Mike Couvillon.
