Lady Eagles let Lady Knight slip by

A slow start and missed opportunities at the end cost the Vermilion Catholic Lady Eagles the edge in a narrow loss to Lafayette Christian Academy.

The first few innings were spent in a 1-1 tie as neither team allowed the other to collect bases.

As the game went into its fourth inning, the wind picked up, cooling the fans while the players began heating up at the plate.

LCA got two runners across the plate in the fourth to make it 3-1.

The Lady Eagles rallied in the sixth, loading up the bases with two outs, when a walk brought in another VC run, making it 3-2.

The LCA pitcher was pulled, and Leah Camel made her way to the plate.

She took a swing, but a slow grounder to the pitcher ended the inning with an out at home.

VC repeated that set-up in the top of the seventh, getting two outs with loaded bases. Kaylee White walked in a run, prompting her to be pulled from the mound, with Kelly White taking her spot. A grounder to short stop brought VC in and began the final
at bat of the game, with the hope of scoring at least two runs.

Katie Frith started it off with a line drive to third that was dropped, but the third baseman for LCA recovered and got the out at first. Zanesia Bernard set one sailing to the outfield for a triple. Caroline David knocked her in thanks to a dropped throw at
first, making it 4-3.

Haley Faulk stepped up to the plate and connected with a pitch to make it to first.

Mary Meaux hit a single and loaded the bases with two outs.

Kelly White got to the plate to try and bring her teammates home, but a grounder and toss to home ended the game.

"We were just a little slow at the bats in the beginning," coach Kim Guidry said about the game. "We allowed them to take advantage."

Right now, Guidry thinks the team is holding steady. "Right now, I think we're doing okay," she explained. "We've just got to get them to realize that every time you come out, it's a different game and you have to be ready."

The loss dropped the Lady Eagles to 4-2 overall this season. "Every game is important," Guidry said. "We have to take care of our business at home so that the games on the road you can maybe steal a few of them."

The Lady Eagles' next challenge is against the Lady Eagles of Central Catholic on Tuesday at home.
