NV places third at state meet

The 2014 Wrestling State Championship meet took place this past weekend and the North Vermilion Patriots had a strong showing.

Along with some good individual performances the entire team was able to finish on the podium, as the third best wrestling team in the state.

The Patriots were fortunate enough to have five members of the team to also make the podium.

Colin Vaughn, the number one seed in the 182 pound weight class, made it all the way to the championship match for the second straight year he wasn’t able to win the final match.

Vaughn for the second straight year finished second in the 182 pound weight class.

Colin Laird finished second in the 152 pound weight class.

Along with Laird and Vaughn, Rhett Maturin also came in second place, losing by pin fall in the 120 pound weight class.

Blake Bernard also found his season end in the state meet via pin fall, but just as the others, Bernard came in second in the 220 pound weight class.

Gavin Becker was also able to find his way onto the podium, as he was able to win the consolation bracket and placed third in the state meet in the 113 pound weight class.

The Patriots also had a couple of guys finish right off of the podium in the fourth spot.

Brennen Landry finished in fourth place due to a 6-4 decision in the 126 pound weight class.

Jonathan Thompson also came in fourth place by losing his consolation match by the decision of 3-2 in the 195 pound weight class.

The Kaplan Pirates also had a member of their wrestling team place inside the top five in his respective weight class.

Tyrone Broussard was able to play fifth in the 132 pound weight class.

Broussard beat Roderick Ward of Evangel by the final decision of 7-2.
