Walter Sneed Jr.

Walter Sneed Jr., 71, of Port Arthur, Texas, expired Tuesday, December 24, 2013, in Abbeville, Louisiana.
He was born January 6, 1942, to the late Lena Minor and Walter Sneed Sr., in New Orleans, Louisiana. Walter was a resident of Port Arthur for 57 years.
Walter Sneed Jr. accepted Christ at an early age in New Iberia, Louisiana. While living in Port Arthur, Texas, he was confirmed as a Catholic in 1966 and became a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. In his later years, he joined St. James Catholic Church.
He attended school in Iberia Parish in Louisiana and Abraham Lincoln High School in the Port Arthur Independent School District. Walter enlisted in the United States Army in 1962, receiving an honorable discharge after serving in the Vietnam Was in 1965.
After returning home from the military, he attended and graduated from Broussard Welding School and later became employed by the Gulf Port Shipyard, working as a welder. Other job experiences included employment at the Sun Beam Bakery, AMCO Trucking Company, Morrow Brothers Trucking Company. He was also the proud owner of Sneed’s Trucking Company, where he owned his own 18-wheeler.
He extended his occupation by becoming employed with Enterprise Trucking Company in Beaumont, Texas, where he retired after a major 18-wheeler accident in 1998.
Walter had many skills and was very proud of his accomplishments. After recovering from his injuries, he occasionally drove for MV Transportation Company.
Walter is preceded in death by his mother, Lena Minor; father, Walter Sneed Sr.; step-mother, Rosa Lee Campbell; grandparents; brothers, Lester Gaddison, Leroy and Louis Chandley; sister, Rosa Bell Glover; uncles, aunts and other relatives.
Walter’s family left to reflect and apprise his memories include: son, Walter Sneed III; daughters, Barbette Sneed of New Orleans, Louisiana, Yolonda Sneed of Cypress, Texas, Yolette Sneed of Fresno, Texas, and Kiffany Smith (Jeffrey) of Fresno, Texas; a special and devoted companion, Vickie Nunez of Abbeville, Louisiana; sister, Ella Ruth Green; brother, Raymond Sneed (Mary); step-daughter, Khia Hunt, of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Shantel Sneed, Yvonne Sneed, Sierra Sneed-Haynes and Christopher Sneed-Haynes of New Orleans, Louisiana; Khilan Cole of Houston, Texas; Kinsley Smith of Fresno, Texas and a very special great-granddaughter, Lanaiya Fisher of New Orleans; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and a multitude of cousins, family members and friends.
Visitation was held Saturday, January 4, 2014, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Gabriel Funeral Home in Port Arthur with services following at St. James Catholic Church 3617 Gulfway Dr. Reverend J.C. Coone officiated. Internment, Greenlawn Cemetery and arrangements were entrusted to Gabriel Funeral Home.
Donations can be sent to the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association in memory of Walter Sneed, Jr for continued research for the cure and cause of Diabetes and Heart Disease.
