Weather being monitored in Vermilion Parish; sandbags being distributed in some areas

With expected high winds and rain, some local municipalities in Vermilion Parish are continuing to distribute sandbags.
“In anticipation of possible flooding from the approaching weather system, the Village of Maurice has sand and bags available for citizens who reside in the Village,” Maurice Mayor Wayne Theriot said Wednesday morning.
The sand is located at the City Hall complex at 115 Corrine St. in Maurice. Citizens are asked to bring their own shovel to fill the bags.
Erath Mayor John Earl LeBlanc said Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. that the town is ready to utilize around 1,000 sandbags, should the need arise.
“We have crews on standby,” LeBlanc said. “We are ready to roll and have a plan in place if flooding does occur. Our problem is that all the bayous and coulees are full. The south wind is just blowing. We had some winds (Tuesday afternoon) of 32 miles per hour. They are saying that we could possibly have consistent 40-mile-per-hour winds.
“We are going to hope for the best, but we are ready if needed.”
Homer Stelly of the Vermilion Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness and Homeland Security said Wednesday morning that the office is continuing to monitor the situation.
“We are going to get an update from Lake Charles at 2:30 p.m.,” Stelly said. “The only thing we are putting out right now is that sand and bags are available at all area barns in Vermilion Parish.”
The locations for the area barns are:
• Main Barn, 2211 Leonie St. in Abbevile
• Area 1 Barn, 13115 Max Switch Rd., Erath
•Area 2 Barn, Calvin LeBouef Rd., Abbeville
• Area 3 Barn, 29 Memorial Dr., Gueydan
• Area 4 Barn, 13531 Gladu Rd., Kaplan
