As Village of Maurice grows, so does its sales tax dollars

The Village of Maurice is growing and so is its sales tax collections.
Subdivisions are being develop in the city limits of Maurice, which is helping its sales tax dollars.
The latest subdivision, Village Estates, just completed the construction of 42 homes on André Street in the Maurice City limits.
The construction of homes has helped boost Maurice’s sales tax collection in May by a whopping 46 percent.
The Village, according to the 2010 census, has a population of just over 1,000 people. Maurice collected more sales taxes in May than Vermilion Parish towns with larger populations.
This past May, Maurice collected $72,700, which is $20,000 more than this time last year.
The city of Kaplan with a population of 5,000, only collected $54,000. Erath, with a population of 2,000, collected $29,000.
If you combine Erath ($29,000), Delcambre ($14,100) and Gueydan ($14,300) collections, it adds up to $57,400.
Maurice Mayor Wayne Theriot said the increase in sales tax collection is a good sign that things are good in Maurice, as well as, the people who live here.
“It means they are spending money,” Theriot added.
The City of Abbeville remains the same in sales tax collection. The city collected $297,650, which is the same as last year.
The School Board, Police Jury and Sheriff’s Office will collect about the same as last year.
The School Board collected $700,000, while the Police Jury collected $1,044,455 and Sheriff’s Office collected $503,000.
