Vermilion Parish voters will decide on building new LSU AG Center building
The voters will decide if they want to rededicate a special tax that is dedicated to parish health units to pay for a new building for the LSU Ag Center in Abbeville.
The Vermilion Police Jury adopted a resolution this week calling for a special election to be held in October.
The voters will decide if they want use just over $1 million of the health unit tax to pay for the cost of building a 6,000 square foot building next to the existing LSU AG building now.
It will be a one-time rededication.
LSU Ag Center Agent said a building is needed badly because the parish has outgrown the building it has today.
The new building will be used for a meeting place for 4-Hers and farmers throughout the parish and a new kitchen will be constructed to be used by 4-Hers.
The new building will also have a new computer area used by all students in the parish.
In other police jury business:
• The Jury agreed to pay Anna Campbell, who is the director of the Vermilion Domestic Abuse Intervention Project, her existing salary until December 31, 2015. In the past the district attorney’s office has paid her salary. New District Attorney Keith Stutes informed Campbell recently that his department will not be paying her salary.
She approached the police jury and then went to the Abbeville City Council asking for help from them. With the DA’s Office not paying her salary, the police jury agreed to pay the rest of her salary through Dec. 31, 2015.
The city council in Abbeville is looking into giving her $2,000 as a one-time donation.
