Vermilion Parish mayors help proclaim October Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Mayors from around Vermilion Parish gathered to sign a proclamation that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The Month of October has been designated as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime. Unfortunately, in Louisiana our state ranks fourth in the nation for domestic violence related homicides.
We can prevent domestic violence homicides in Louisiana. We urge the citizens of Acadiana to learn more about the resources available to those seeking safety from violent relationships and how to hold offenders accountable. The mayors of Vermilion parish took a stand this week by proclaiming October as Domestic Violence Awareness month in Vermilion parish. They have committed their support to eliminating violence against families. Mayor Mark Piazza of Abbeville stated “Domestic violence has become more prevalent as a social problem and in recognition of the important work done by Faith House in our communities; I hereby proclaim October 2015 as domestic violence awareness month and encourage all of our citizens to support efforts to eliminate violence in our communities.”
