VC takes care of Houma Christian, 54-21

The Vermilion Catholic Eagles had no trouble beating the Houma Christian Warriors, 54-21, in the first round of the Division IV playoffs.
With the win, the Eagles travel to Baton Rouge Friday to battle Madison Prep (7-3). Prep beat Ascension Catholic 36-16 on Friday.
The VC Eagles, the No. 1 seed, did have a little difficulty stopping Houma Christian’s quarterback Drake Battaglia. The senior quarterback was almost a one-man show for the Warriors.
At quarterback, he completed 20 out of 40 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. When he was not scrambling to throw a pass, he was running with the pigskin. He rushed 17 times for 115 yards. He also punted twice for a 33 yard average, and he had six kick off returns for 61 yards.
About the only thing he did not do was catch a pass.
When the game was over and the players were shaking hands, VC head coach Russell Kuhns sought him out in the crowd, shook his hand and then gave him a hug.
“He is a good athlete,” said Kuhns. “He was probably the best athlete we played all year. We tried to contain him, but try is a big word with that kid. No. 2 was a slippery dude.”
All game, VC’s defense linemen and corners were chasing him in the backfield as he rolled left and he rolled right.
They managed to tackle him a few times behind the line of scrimmage. Paul Veazey had two of those tackles.
Andre Girouard, a VC corner, said he got his cardio workout Friday night.
“I compare their quarterback to Johnny Manzel (former Texas A&M quarterback),” said Girouard. “He knew how to scramble and how to find the holes in the defense. Our defensive line did a great job containing. Our secondary also did a good job containing the coverage.”
The Eagles’ offense had little trouble putting up numbers of their own.
On VC’s first play on offense, the Eagles were in the end zone. Quarterback Hunter Frith connected with Emile Trahan for a 41-yard touchdown reception. Trahan nailed the extra point and the blowout began.
On VC’s next possession, it took a whopping two plays for VC to find the end zone. On the first play, Chris Campbell had a 20-yard run. On the next play, Tyler Derouen scooted another 20 yards for a touchdown.
In only three offensive plays, VC scored two touchdowns.
The Eagles did not score again until the 8:48 mark in the second period.
Frith found a streaking Derouen up the middle for a 78-yard passing reception for a touchdown. The Eagles would score again with four minutes left in the first half on a Frith-Trahan 17 yard reception. Trahan’s extra point made it 28-0 right before halftime.
Frith had another great night passing the football. He was 11 out of 18 for 310 yards and six touchdowns.
With catches for VC were Derouen (2-111, 2 TDs), Emile Trahan (3-75, 2 TDs), Payton Trahan (2-69, 1 TD), Devron Constintine (1-39, TD), Chris Campbell (1-18) and Gage Broussard (1-4).
Rushers for VC were: Campbell (7-58 1 TD), Derouen (4-47, 1 TD), Donnie Comeaux (2-24), Emile Trahan (1-11), Trevon Lane (1-10), Alex LeBlanc (1-3) and Austin Belaire (1-1).
