Three months later, family searches for closure

Son just getting out of hospital; now he wants to know who caused accident

The family of a New Iberia woman, who was killed in a three-vehicle accident in December, is finally getting a chance to make funeral arrangements for their loved one.
Geraldine Chauvin was killed on Dec. 3, 2015 when the Buick she was driving was hit from behind while driving east on La. 14, leaving Kaplan. It happened by the Kaplan High School.
In the vehicle was Chauvin, who was driving and her son, Thaddeus Chauvin, who was a passenger in the front seat.
According to the Kaplan Police, someone hit the Chauvin vehicle from behind, which caused it to veer into the left lane and hit a GMC truck head-on.
Chauvin lost her life in the accident, while Thaddeus broke at least 15 bones and spent the next two months in a Lafayette hospital. He was in a drug induced comma for a month and in the middle of January, he was finally released. Thaddeus is learning how to walk again because of the broken bones in his legs. He also had to have reconstruction surgery on his face.
Thaddeus said he does not remember anything about the accident. He learned a month after being in the hospital that his mother had died in the accident.
“My mom was the type of person who would help anyone,” said Thaddeus. “She was a kind and nice person.”
“We just want closure,” said Suzanne Chauvin, the daughter of Thaddeus. “It has been hard not knowing who caused this accident. The family does not want any money. We just want the person to come forward so this can end.”
On Monday, three months after the accident, the Chauvin family went to make funeral arrangements for Geraldine. She will be cremated.
In the meantime, the Kaplan Police have no new leads on what type of vehicle hit the Chauvin car, causing it to crash into a truck in the other lane.
If anyone knows anything, they can call the Kaplan police.
