Strawberry fig ice cream surprise in Abbeville

You have heard of strawberry ice cream. Maybe, you have heard of fig ice cream. But I bet you have never heard of strawberry fig ice cream.
If you attended the 7th Annual Cake and Ice Cream Festival Saturday at A. A. Comeaux Park in Abbeville, then maybe you were lucky enough to try a batch of fig ice cream and a batch of strawberry fig ice cream.
Those were the two new flavors in this year’s ice cream contests. In their first year, they made a big impact by finishing first and second out of eight entries.
Nadine Guidry, entering her first ice cream contest, dethrowned six-time winner Sherry Brasseaux, with her unique strawberry fig ice cream.
Guidry was thrilled to win her first title.
“This is awesome,” Guidry said after finding out she won. She also won $100 and a plaque.
She did not hesitate when asked why she wanted to use figs in her ice cream.
“It is fig season,’ said Guidry. Guidry admitted this was the first time she has ever made fig ice cream. When she decided what ice cream flavor she wanted, she went home and spoke with her mom about getting an old family recipe for fig ice cream. It involved mixing in sugar, eggs and evaporated milk to help sweeten it. After stirring everything together, she then added fig preserves and strawberry preserves and blended everything together in the ice scream tub.
Her electrical ice cream machine spun for two hours Saturday morning. She tasted it and hoped she had a winner.
“It tasted delicious,” she said. “You could tell it was home made. It was not store bought.”
She added strawberry preserves because she has jars available.
Guidry, the sister of Abbeville attorney Burton Guidry, plans to enter next year but is not 100 percent sure what type of ice cream she will make.
“I don’t know yet.”
