No slowing down Vermilion Honor Guard

There is no slowing down for the Vermilion Parish Honor Guard of Kaplan American Legion Post 271.
Since 1988, the Honor Guard has been busy performing funerals for veterans and other civic ceremonies, including Monday’s Memorial Day Ceremonies.
In the last 27 years, they have now performed 1,560 funerals.
There are 15 members of the Honor Guard, who range in age from 89, the oldest, to 53, the youngest.
“We are not getting any younger,” said Galis Touchet of the Honor Guard. “Any veteran who wants to be a part of this organization, we welcome anyone who wants to join.”
Touchet did say anyone interested needs to be serious about joining because it cost the Honor Guard $600 a person to outfit a new member. That includes the uniform and rifle.
Each year, it takes a budget of around $6,000 a year to keep the Honor Guard operating. That money goes towards insurance and mechanical costs for their transportation van, along with gas and other expenses.
Touchet said they welcome donations to help with operating costs. They can be mailed to: Vermilion Honor Guard, 2830 Big Foot Road, Abbeville, La. 70510.
The primary function of the Honor Guard is serving as a final memorial for deceased veterans and to accommodate the wishes of their families. On the day of the funeral, the guard members offer a prayer for their fallen comrade at the funeral home, then line up and present arms as the casket is placed in the hearse and as it enters and exits the church. At the cemetery, they present arms, perform a 3 to 6 volley rifle salute, play Taps, and present the family with the folded American flag and 21 polished fired shells
