Maurice man allegedly threatens police during arrest
MAURICE — A man allegedly carrying a stolen gun is accused of saying he should have used the weapon against police officers during an arrest.
Officers with the Village of Maurice arrested Kelvin Shepherd Tuesday morning on multiple charges, including threatening a police officer.
Shepherd, 24, of Maurice faces charges of resisting an officer, possession of a firearm/carry concealed weapon by a convicted felon, battery of a police officer, illegal possession of stolen firearm and threatening a public official. Shepherd was taken to the Vermilion Parish Correctional Center.
Maurice Assistant Police Chief Guy Nerren said he stopped Shepherd to ask for identification after he noticed him walking down Vincent Road around 9:45 a.m.
“We have had a few vehicle burglaries,” Nerren said. “He fit the description from some video footage we had from one of the burglaries.”
Shepherd did not have identification. Nerren, who called for another officer to back him up, said that after talking to him, Shepherd admitted to having outstanding warrants.
“He did have warrants,” Nerren said. “When I went to place him under arrest, he started fighting us.”
During a search, officers discovered Shepherd had a gun.
“We found a 9 mm Luger in the right side waistband of his pants,” Nerren said. “We found out that he (Shepherd) is a convicted felon and the gun was reported stolen out of Lafayette.”
Shepherd allegedly made a remark to the officers during the search that prompted the charge of threatening a public official.
“The officer went to pat him down and I was holding him,” Nerren explained, “He said he knew that he should have shot us.”
