Kaplan woman, who injures four in accident and kills unborn baby, will receive no more than 20 years in prison

A Kaplan woman, who caused a head-on collision resulting in the death of an unborn baby and injuring four others, will be sentenced to no more than 20 years in prison.
Jennie H. Maturin agreed to plead no-contest to her fourth DWI offense, third-degree feticide (killing unborn child) and four counts of vehicular negligent last week in the 15th Judicial District Court.
Had she not took the plea agreement, there is a good chance the state would have charged her as a habitual offender, and she could have been sentenced to life in prison if found guilty.
Instead, Judge Ed Broussard will do a presentencing investigative report before sentencing her. The most he will sentence her is 20 years, based on a plea agreement.
The accident on the bridge occurred in August of 2013.
She was driving a vehicle with three passengers, including a female who was pregnant.
Because Maturin was under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, she crossed the center line and hit an oncoming vehicle straight-on.
The person in the other vehicle was seriously injured, along with the three passengers in her vehicle. The injuries sustained by one of her passengers caused her to lose the passenger’s unborn baby.
The same day she reached a plea agreement, Maturin also had charges pending, including a third DWI, which she pled guilty to at the same time she pled guilty to her fourth DWI.
In a separate case, she pled no contest to the charge of illegally possessing stolen things of more than $1,500 and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
Assistant district attorney Michael Barras was handling the case for the state and Chase Edwards was Maturin’s attorney.
