Handful of Vermilion Parish residents heading to San Antonio
There are a handful of Vermilion Parish residents who are traveling to San Antonio to watch the UL Cajun basketball team play.
Those who will be in San Antonio today to watch the tip off at 2:10 p.m., left Vermilion Parish Thursday and made the seven hour drive.
Wayne and Marlene Theriot, along with David and Chris Guidry, left Maurice at 10 a.m. and were scheduled to arrive in San Antonio by 5 p.m.
The four of them were in New Orleans and watched the Cajuns upset Georgia State 82-81 in overtime in the Sun Belt Championship on Sunday.
The Theriots are no strangers to watching the Cajuns play in the NCAA tournament. They have seen them play three times in the tournament, so this will be their fourth trip there.
“We decided to go on our way back from New Orleans (Sun Belt Championship),” said Wayne. “We were figuring it would be either San Antonio or Orlando. We were going either way.”
The Guidrys and the Theriots will be driving back to Maurice on Saturday despite the outcome. The Theriots will be at North Vermilion baseball field for noon Saturday because NV is honoring the 1994 State Championship baseball team from North Vermilion. The Theriots’ son Nick was a member of that team.
Now, if the Cajuns win Friday, the Theriots and Guidrys are expected to drive right back to San Antonio to watch them play the winner of the Baylor/Nebraska game on Sunday.
Randall Gaspard and his wife, Theresa, also left Thursday. The Gaspards, however, left Thursday after 2 p.m. and are not expected to make it to San Antonio that night. They are scheduled to stop in Katy, Texas, which is past Houston.
Friday morning they will drive to San Antonio and are ready to stay three days if they have to.
“It is going to be a good drive,” said Randall. “I have driven to San Antonio before.”
Randall said he is looking forward to watching the Cajuns matchup against Creighton’s star Doug McDermott, who is the fifth NCAA Division I scorer with 3,105 points, and Cajun defender, Shawn Long.
