Fr. Glenn Meaux Golf tournament Saturday will benefit Haiti mission
Father Glenn Meaux’s annual “Voice for the Voiceless” Golf Classic will celebrate its 21st year this Saturday.
Father Meaux said he is looking for golfers to join the event.
“We need to drum up some players,” Meaux said. “We used have more than 200 players, but it dropped three years ago.”
The event will take place this Saturday, Dec. 12. Registration is $95 and will begin at 11 a.m. A shotgun start is set for noon.
“Every penny goes to our mission,” Meaux said.
Those who come out Saturday to Vermilion Oaks will certainly be helping a good cause. Father Meaux’s golf tournament has helped strengthen the Haiti mission during the last 20-plus years.
“When we got there in 1989,” Meaux explained, “there was a school that had 18 children. Now it has 1,200. There are agriculture projects. We provide small business loans for 540 mothers. The people there are beginning to believe in each other and believe they are in a community of faith.
“That is the strong part.”
A great deal of that comes as a direct result of successful golf tournaments.
“Like any mission, it takes a few bucks,” Meaux said. “Golfers can help to make a difference on Saturday. Even if you don’t play golf, you can get your friends to come and play.”
The tournament usually takes place in August. Weather pushed this year’s event to December. The bright side...
“The weather should be very nice,” Meaux said.
Meaux thanked everyone who has helped make the tournament possible.
“We have had people who have been with us from the start,” Meaux said. “We have people who help with food and drinks. I want to thank all the folks from the area who have been so faithful for so many years.”
The help from many will help to create an event that will help many more. Meaux said that is the spirit of the tournament.
“What people are going to see Saturday is a sign of stewardship,” Meaux said. “If you believe in the Gospels, stewardship is a way of life. We believe that all we have is the gift of the Lord. It stands to reason, to give glory to him, we need to give back.
“Charity is one way to do that.”
