Finding teachers for Vermilion Parish schools not too hard; AHS in need of two math teachers

With a month left before public school starts, there are only three teaching positions being advertised. Two of the three are for secondary math teachers.
Over the last month, the School Board office has been filling more than 100 teaching positions. Finding new elementary teachers has been easy for the School Board office. What has been difficult is finding high school math teachers.
Abbeville High is in need of two math teachers. When school begins in August, the fully staffed math department has five math teachers.
AHS Principal Ivy Landry said last year’s two math teachers transferred to other schools in the parish. He also added he does not have a problem keeping math teachers because the three remaining math teachers have been at AHS for 10-plus years. A former AHS math teacher recently retired after 30 years at AHS.
Landry said he was not in the panic stage in finding a math teacher.
“I am not worried,” said Landry. “We are hoping to pick up a couple of certified teachers from around the area.”
He said he would not be surprised if he begins seeing math teachers from Lafayette Parish applying in Vermilion Parish. Lafayette Parish School System has to cut $23 million from its budget for the next fiscal year. There is a good chance, because of the cuts, some teachers will be laid off.
The other advertised positions on the school board website are:
• Early Childhood Special Education Teacher at Kaplan High
• A school registered nurse for central office.
The School Board will stop advertising three of the four positions on July 7 and then begin interviewing the applicants.
Their positions become available on Aug. 6, 2014.
