Egg Knocking contest returning to Abbeville

For the second year in a row, kids in Vermilion Parish will be able to see who has the toughest egg.
The second Egg Knocking contest is scheduled for Saturday, April 12, in Magdalen Square in downtown Abbeville. The contestants will take turns knocking the pointed ends of their eggs together until one of the eggs breaks. The practice dates back several decades and is popular in areas in Louisiana, including Marksville and Cottonport, as well as other countries around the world.
“It’s so wonderful to be able to bring it back to life again,” said Debbie Garrot, a member of the Abbeville Film and Visitor’s Commission, who helped organize the contest last year and is doing so again this year.
The event, which is sponsored by Abbeville’s Film and Visitor’s Commission, will coincide with that day’s Downtown Abbeville Farmer’s Market. The contest is free to enter. Registration will take place from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The contest will begin at 9:45 a.m.
The contest will feature two categories. The first category will be for ages 5-8. First and second place will each be awarded an Easter basket filled with “goodies.” The second category includes ages 9-12. First place will receive $50, while second takes home $25.
Each contestant must register three hard-boiled, dyed chicken eggs. It is recommended that each contestant bring six such eggs in the event that one or more of the eggs crack prior to the contest. A limited amount of free hard-boiled eggs will be available for those children who would like to participate, but do not have eggs. Garrot said she wants as many kids as possible to enjoy the contest.
“We had some people who had experienced egg knocking as children and wanted their grandchildren to experience it,” Garrot said. “That was pretty cool.”
That should be the case again this year.
“Come and join us for the fun!” Garrot exclaimed. “I am really excited because this brought so much joy.”
