Driver involved in singe-vehicle crash near Kaplan has died

According to Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillon, the driver of a vehicle involved in a crash Thursday has died as a result of injuries sustained in that crash.
Samuel Johnnie of Kaplan which was the driver of the 2011 Suzuki Equator that was involved in a single-vehicle crash Thursday evening on Cheneau Road near Kaplan.
The investigation is ongoing and additional information will be provided as the investigation moves forward.
According to Sheriff Couvillon, at approximately 6 p.m. this afternoon Sheriff Deputies responded to a single vehicle crash on Cheneau Road near Kaplan which resulted in two occupants being air lifted by Acadian Ambulance Air-Med to Lafayette Hospitals with critical injuries. Two others were transported to local Hospitals with moderate injuries.
Preliminary investigation shows that a 2011 Suzuki Equator, driven by Johnnie, was traveling west bound on Cheneau Road at a high rate of speed. For unknown reasons, the vehicle traveled off the roadway, struck a ditch embankment and came to rest on a levee.
Sheriff Couvillon said that three of the four occupants in the vehicle, all adult males, were unrestrained and ejected.
Excessive speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash. State Police collected blood samples and submitted those samples to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
