Delcambre’s Esponge named Kiwanis Student of Month

Cameron Esponge is getting the most out of his time at Delcambre High School.
The senior, who has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout his time at Delcambre, is a member of the school’s band, cross country team and track and field teams as well as several clubs.
“He’s so talented and has so many accolades that it would take a while to list all of them,” Delcambre Assistant Principal Brad Judice told members of the Abbeville Kiwanis Club.
The Kiwanis Club invited Esponge to its weekly meeting Tuesday to recognize him as the Student of the Month. Along with a sign to put in his yard, Esponge received a gift card to Sonic in Abbeville.
“Thank you for this honor,” Esponge told the Kiwanians.
Esponge has been a member of Delcambre’s cross country team for seven years.
“Our cross country team got fifth in the state this year,” Esponge said. “That is something I am really proud of.”
As for track, Esponge said he is currently training for the upcoming season.”
On the academic side, Esponge takes honors classes and is a member of the Beta Club. That 4.0 remains a goal.
“I hope I can keep it for the rest of high school,” Esponge said.
With all that he does, Esponge has favorite aspect of high school.
“I would say that my most valued aspect would be band,” Esponge said. “I have played the trumpet since I was in sixth grade. I have been in the marching band since I was in seventh grade.”
He has taken his enjoyments of band to the next level.
“Through my time in high school I have been in various honor bands,” Esponge said. “It has been with students from the parish and district. You play at a more advanced level.
“I have been in the state honor band for the last three years.”
Esponge has even found involvement away from school.
“I am part of Drum Corps International,” Esponge said. “It’s a band program that occurs over the summer. It is a pretty prestigious activity for band students across the country.
“During the summer we travel to different venues and it is very interesting.”
A six-week trip with that group next summer is part of the future Esponge said he is looking forward to. Esponge said he plans to attend the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
“I have looked at petroleum engineering for a long time,” Esponge said. “I am starting to rethink that because things are looking to great. I am thinking about chemical engineering. I could also go into the medical field.”
