Another leak at Maurice nursing home; residents evacuated
For the second time in 48 hours, elderly residents had to be moved Sunday afternoon after the carbon monoxide alarm sounded in Pelican Pointe in Maurice.
The residents were transported to the nearby Amana Christian Fellowship Center, across the street from Pelican Pointe, for the second time since Friday.
As of of 5 p.m. on Sunday, it was not known if the residents of Pelican Point were going to stay the night at Amana Christian.
The same residents had to leave the Vermilion Parish nursing home Friday night after a gas dryer was discovered leaking. The residents were brought to Amana Christian in the 35 degree weather Friday night. The residents slept at the church and then were brought back to nursing home Saturday morning.
On Sunday, Maurice Fire Chief Matthew Trahan was not sure if there was a leak.
Throughout Sunday afternoon, volunteers helped bring mattresses, bottles of water, and nursing charts to Amana Christian. Sunday afternoon it was not known how many residents were transported.
Family members arrived Sunday afternoon and picked up their family member at Amana Christian. Other residents of Pelican Pointe were transported by Acadian Ambulance to other nursing homes in the area.
