Abducted woman uses cell phone to alert police before escaping

Abbeville man charged with kidnapping, rape

A woman’s resolve helped to save her from a tragic situation and put an Abbeville man behind bars.
Abbeville Police arrested Kevin Moore, 50, early Tuesday, charging him with second-degree kidnapping, forcible rape and false imprisonment; offender armed.
“The victim stated that she was walking on her way home from work when she was abducted by Kevin Moore,” Abbeville Police Lt. David Hardy said.
Moore is accused of taking the woman to an abandoned residence on Vernon Street in Abbeville.
“She said there she was restrained when he used an item as a weapon,” Hardy said, “and then he raped her.”
After an undisclosed period of time, the woman was able to obtain her cell phone.
“She was able to dial 911 without him noticing,” Hardy explained. “911 alerted us and we had a general area of the location of the phone.”
The woman made the call to 911 around 2 a.m.
The woman eventually escaped from Moore and jumped through a window of the abandoned residence. She quickly located police who were already in the area.
“The officers then surrounded that residence,” Hardy said. “They made entry and found Kevin Moore hiding in a cabinet.”
Police arrested Moore at 3:55 a.m. He is currently being held in the Vermilion Parish Correction Center on a total bond of $250,000.
The woman’s own actions played a pivotal role.
“She did a great job during such an unfortunate situation,” Hardy said. “She never gave up.”
Once she dialed 911, the woman talked to Moore in such a way to alert authorities, but not to make him aware of the phone’s activation.
“The dispatcher was able to listen in on what was taking place,” Hardy said. “She begged Moore to please let her go home to her kids.
“She did everything right.”
Abbeville Det. Leland Laseter, who worked closely with the case, also commended the efforts of Vermilion Parish 911 and the Abbeville Police Department’s dispatcher.
Hardy said there is not believed to be any connection between the alleged victim and the accused.
