According to Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillon, at 8:24 Tuesday morning, deputies responded to a 911 call of a crop duster crashing in a field off of Ellis Bridge Road south of Gueydan.
A witness said the pilot was spraying chemicals over a rice field and he saw him pass and then turn around to make another pass. The person, while in his house, heard an explosion. He first thought it was thunder and then he walked outside and saw the burning airplane.
The crash happened about 100 yards from his house.
Sheriff Couvillon says that deputies have secured the scene and have contacted the (FAA) Federal Aviation Administration and the (NTSB) National Transportation and Safety Board, who are responsible for handling these types of investigations.
At this time, there was no official word on what caused the accident.
Finally, Sheriff Couvillon says that additional information will be provided as more information becomes available.
