Abbeville's Charles Campbell retains school board seat
Abbeville School Board Member Charles Campbell learned this past week that his opponent Lamondon Williams withdrew his name from the District F School Board race.
With Lamondon’s withdrawal, Campbell is declared the winner.
In January, he will begin his sixth consecutive term as school board member. For the last five, he has had no opponents.
When Williams qualified, it meant Campbell would have to campaign for the second time in 20 years. He purchased political signs and began knocking on doors. Earlier this month, he was notified of Williams’ actions
“It is a relief,” said Campbell. “I am not sure why he did it (resigned).”
Because Williams withdrew so late into the year, his name will still be on the ballot for early voting and the Nov. 4 election.
Mike Bertrand, the registrar of voters, said voters will be informed before they vote about Williams’ withdrawal.
Early voting begins this Tuesday and will continue through Tuesday (Oct. 21) .
The hours for early voting will be from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Vermilion Parish Courthouse.
Williams is the second
candidate to pull out of an election
before early voting in Vermilion Parish.
The Louisiana State Board of Ethics asked a 15th Judicial District judge to disqualify Gueydan Alderman Jude Reese from running for re-election because of an outstanding fine the board had posed on Reese due to failing to file a timely 2011 amended finance report.
Judge Glennon P. Everett ruled in favor of the State Board of Ethics.
Reese released a statement saying, according to his records he did not violated any filing rules and has always been very cautious when it comes to filing the proper paper work such as the financial disclosers.
The new Gueydan aldermen are Jason Suire (new), Scott Vallo, Claudette Price, Marilyn Campbell, and Gail Smith.
