Abbeville Police investigate phone scam, alert public
On Nov. 24, 2015, Abbeville Police Department was notified by an individual who was the victim of a scam.
The individual reported that he was notified by text message that he would receive a check in the mail. Once he received the check he was told to go and deposit the check into his checking account, keep $200.00, and to send the remaining money back to an address.
The check was in the amount of $1,850.00. The individual was receiving the text messages from (858) 429-9371.
Any person who receives similar text messages should not reply and a person should not send money to a person or business who requests you to deposit a check, keep a portion of the money, and send the remaining amount back. The person(s) behind the scams usually request the money be placed on a pre-paid gift card or money gram.
