Abbeville Police arrest man allegedly involved in December chase

Abbeville Police arrested a man early Sunday morning, a little more than a month and a half after alluding them during a chase.
Police booked John Dorion Nunez of Abbeville on several charges, including resisting and officer with force or violence.
Around 3 a.m. on Sunday, officers noticed Nunez inside the Walmart on Veterans Memorial Drive.
“The officers recognized him and knew that we had warrants on him for a previous incident,” Abbeville Police Lt. David Hardy said.
The two officers attempted to make contact with Nunez.
“He tried running from the officers,” Hardy said.
The officers made contact with Nunez near the store’s entrance.
“He began to fight with the officers,” Hardy said. “He punched one of them.”
Nunez escaped and fled on foot. The officers eventually caught up with Nunez, using a taser to subdue him.
“He continued to try to fight,” Hardy said.
After making an arrest, officers brought Nunez to the hospital.
“He was cleared of any injuries from the tasing,” Hardy said.
Police then transported Nunez to the Vermilion Parish Correctional Center. He faces charges of resisting an officer with force or violence, resisting an officer by flight and misrepresentation during booking.
“He didn’t want to give officers any of his information,” Hardy said.
As for the warrant, it stems from an incident late last year. On Dec. 29, Hardy said officers were involved in a vehicle chase with Nunez.
“He had 39 charges from the incident,” Hardy said. “It was bunch of traffic violations.”
Those charges against Nunez, whem allegedly ran multiple stop signs during the chase, include aggravated flight from an officer, reckless operation and aggravated assault upon and officer.
“He used his vehicle to travel head on with an officer,” Hardy said. “That caused the officer to leave the roadway.”
Deeming the chase too dangerous, officers backed off the chase.
“They felt it was too dangerous to continue,” Hardy said. “They got him Sunday morning.”
