Abbeville police alert citizens to phone scam claiming to be from Federal Government
The Abbeville Police Department is alerting citizens of a recent scam.
Residents have reported receiving phone calls from someone claiming to be a representative of the Federal Government.
“The individual informs the people that they have won money,” Abbeville Det. Leland Laseter said, “but in order to receive the money your personal information must be provided.”
A major red flag with this situation is the number from which the calls originate. The individual is generating the calls from 658-945-66.
“This is how the number is showing up on caller ID,” Laseter said.
As is always the case with phone scams, the best way to avoid any negative issues is to not give in to any requests being made.
“Do not provide any of your personal information over the phone,” Laseter stressed. “Personal information includes name, date of birth, social security number, bank account numbers, etc.”
