Abbeville goes for state title in ‘Clean City’ contest

Once again, Abbeville will be competing for the State Cleanest City State Title for District 3.
This year's judging will be held on May 6 at 11:30 a.m.
“So everyone has time to clean up and fix up,” Keep Abbeville Beautiful’s Sandra Creswell said. “It is important that every citizen make a concerted effort to clean up their homes and businesses.”
Here are the divisions in which the city will be judged:
Approaches to city--Must be free of litter and weeds around poles, signs and in roadside ditches. Poles should be free of posters; Parks, recreation areas and cemeteries should be litter free and well kept; Public and/or municipal buildings must have lawns mowed, fences free of weeds and grass; Business establishments--trash and garbage must be properly contained with a well kept overall appearance; Residential areas--Lawns mowed and edged. Please make an effort to place trash cans behind home on the day of judging; Streets, sidewalks, neutral grounds--lawns mowed and edged; weeds removed from cracks in sidewalks and streets; Vacant lots--free of litter, junk and abandoned cars. Grass and weeds should be cut 10 feet from the street; Overall impression of cleanliness--well kept and attractive in appearance; Community involvement and book of evidence--Publicity and before and after pictures and evidence of community support.
The contest is sponsored by the City of Abbeville, Keep Abbeville Beautiful and the Abbeville Garden Club. The club is an affiliate of National Garden Clubs, Inc., Deep South Region, and Louisiana Garden Clubs Federation District III.
“If we all do our part, we should be successful,” Creswell said.
City officials have promised full cooperation to complete cleanup efforts with the aide of city employees in conjunction with the Solid Waste Department of the Vermilion Parish Police Jury, the Sheriff and countless volunteers.
“Lets all work together and make Abbeville the cleanest and most beautiful city in the state,” Creswell said.
