Everything needed for a baby during the first few month alone can have a financial impact for many families.
For single mothers, that cost can be greatly magnified.
A Pregnancy Center & Clinic (APCC) is teaming with the Abbeville Fire Department to try to help single mothers ease the financial burden.
“We are hoping to get the community more involved in helping moms and unwed mothers,” said Betty Henson, an Abbeville resident and volunteer with APCC.
Through April, donations will be accepted at the Main Station of the Abbeville Fire Department. Items needed are:
• diapers (preemie, newborn and 1-3)
• baby powder
• baby lotion
• baby wash
• baby bottles (capped and packaged)
• diaper rash cream
• receiving blankets
• diaper bags
• Boppy pillows
• pacifiers (packaged)
“These are things that moms need every single day,” Henson said. “These are things they need and some can’t afford it.”
Henson said donating from the items listed helps APCC best serve those in need.
“Monetary donations are of course welcome,” she added.
A Pregnancy Center & Clinic, a non-profit organization, has its home office in Lafayette. It’s pantry that helps single mothers is called Grace’s Closet.
“Our mission to help women who are pregnant and don’t have the resources needed to take care of the child,” Executive Director Patrice Lewis said.
Henson, along with another local volunteer Mary Mire, approached Lewis about the idea of creating a drive with the fire department.
Abbeville Fire Chief Jude Mire said that donations can be given to whoever is on shift.
“They can give it to whoever comes to the front door,” Mire said. “Then they will give it to me.
“We are more than happy to be involved in this.”
Abbeville Firefighter April Bodin agreed.
“They came to us with an amazing idea that they wanted to see come to life,” Bodin said. “We are more than happy to help.
“Anything we can do to help give back to the people we serve, we are always trying to do that.”
