Abbeville family still piecing life back together after mobile home fire
It has been almost two weeks since Kristi Cormier, her fiancé and three children lost everything in a mobile home fire. They are still piecing their lives back together.
On Dec. 5, a 40-year-old mobile home, owned by Cormier and her fiancé, caught on fire and burned within minutes. Electrical could have been the cause of the fire.
No one was home at the time of the fire, and everything was lost in the Abbeville fire.
The family has been living next door in her future mother-in-law’s home. They are sleeping on the living room floor and using bed rooms to pile donated clothes and other items in.
On Tuesday, Cormier was in Abbeville to receive a financial donation from the Abbeville Kiwanis Club and give an update on her family’s situation.
She told the Abbeville Kiwanis Club members that Vermilion Parish has been generous when donating clothes. But what her family is in need of is everyday living items like toothpaste, shampoo and soap.
“The children are coping with the situation,” said Cormier. “We are getting a lot of clothes donations. We are getting gift cards to buy personal items. All in all, it has been challenging. We are dealing with it.”
The biggest thing they need but have yet to find is a place to live. Living in the middle of her future mother in law’s living room floor has its challenges. Cormier said it is also a hardship for her future mother-in-law because of the inconvenience her family is causing her future mother and father in law.
Looking for a new place to live is the number one priority for her family. When a new home is located, then they will need items to put in the new home.
“My dream is to try and find a place to live in by Christmas,” Cormier told the Kiwanis Club. “I would love to have our own Christmas tree with presents underneath. I know my children would love that.”
If anyone has anything to donate to the Cormier family, they can call her at 337-255-5986.
