‘Overwhelming’ response results in second blood drive for Kieu
Supporters and friends helped organize a blood drive to help the Kieu family on July 12.
Hoat Kieu had been hospitalized earlier this year.
The results proved more positive than anyone could have hoped.
“For the last blood drive there was a tremendous response,” said Lisa Primeaux, a friend of the Kieu family. “It is hard to predict the turnout for these events and Our Lady of Lourdes was thrilled to fill all 40 blood donation bags that they brought.”
With that, a second drive is now scheduled.
“We are blessed to say that due to the overwhelming support shown to the Kieu family a second blood drive will be held,” Primeaux said.
That will take place on Sunday, Aug. 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the K.C. hall in Abbeville.
“Unfortunately, some donors at the end of the day had to be turned away,” Primeaux said of the last drive. “We are hopeful that the response this time will be just as positive and every donor will be able to donate.”
The benefit from the blood drive is multi-faceted. The donations will help the Kieu’s with Hoat’s medical cost. The gift of blood will save up to three lives per pint.
The support and concern of the community really touched both Hoat and Nga Kieu, according to friends.
“The last blood drive was a gathering of old friends and the making of new friends,” Primeaux said. “I think the support shown was a great healing grace for this family.”
Maggie Menard, another friend of the family who helped put together the drive, said preparation is set for another large turnout.
“We learned a great deal from the last drive,” Menard said. “Planning appropriately, we feel that we can accommodate more people. That is why, although walk-ins are encouraged and welcome, we would like to try and schedule appointments to expedite the process as well as assist Our Lady of Lourdes in their planning for this event.
“Our Lady of Lourdes has committed to sending a larger screening crew this time and we are hoping that the community shows the same level of support.”
Organizers are asking the community to please come out and support a “great cause” and donate on Sunday, Aug. 3, from 10-3. To schedule an appointment, please contact Tammy Ryder at 337-501-7238.
“If you can’t donate please take a moment and come by just to say hello, Primeaux said. “Your concern and care is their gift.”
