Wildcats defeat Erath in 6-3A opener

ERATH - The Abbeville Wildcats opened District 6-3A play with a 51-40 road-win over the Erath Bobcats.

The Wildcats came out on fire from the outside as Desmond Taylor, Tristan Greene and Jaron Hoffpauir all made 3-point shots in the first quarter. Not to be outdone, Clements Dorsey added four points and Matthew Johnson added two from inside the arc. Taylor also made 3-3 free throw attempts as Abbeville jumped out to an 18-9 lead after one quarter.

“They hit the outside shot early and jumped on us,” said Erath head coach Tommie Pillette of Abbeville’s quick start. “That really opened up the inside game for them.”

Erath played the second quarter much closer, but Abbeville still managed to win it 13-11 and take a 31-20 lead into the locker room. Dorsey scored six from inside the paint in the quarter. Johnson added two more and Jordan Brooks got on the board with two points. Taylor buried another three to keep the Bobcats’ defense stretched.

Aaron Greene sank a three for Erath while Elijah Mitchell and Jeremiah Mitchell combined to score six points to keep Erath in the game.

In the third quarter, the offenses disappeared as both teams combined to score only nine points. Alec Toups made his second three of the game and Jeremiah Mitchell added two more points to give Erath the 5-4 quarter advantage. Greene added a 2-point basket for Abbeville, while Dorsey and Brooks combined to make two free throws to account for Abbeville’s points. Heading to the fourth, Abbeville led 35-25.

In fourth quarter, the offenses reemerged. Taylor nailed his third three of the game. Tre’vail Briggs scored all four of his points and Brooks and Dorsey each added another basket. For Erath Greene drained another three, Elijah Mitchell added four more points and Toups and Elijah Mitchell combined to make four foul shots. Abbeville won the quarter 16-15 to garner the 11-point victory.

“Winning our first district game is a good start,” said Abbeville head coach Berwick Hamilton. “Erath is very well-coached, disciplined and can shoot. We were able to out rebound them and score inside. Our guards played well, but need to be more assertive.”

Taylor scored a game-high 14 for Abbeville. Dorsey followed him with 13 points. Hoffpauir tallied six while Tristan Greene and Brooks each scored five. Briggs and Johnson each added four.

Alec Toups led Erath with nine points. Aaron Greene and Jeremiah Mitchell added eight points each. Elijah Mitchell punched-in seven, while Jalen Senegal scored four. Justin Music and Ross Bares each scored two.
