VC begins push for the Dome

It is said that one of the harder things to do in all of sports is to beat a team for a second time for Vermilion Catholic’s sake they hope that’s not the case.

For the second time this year VC will be facing off against district rival Central Catholic.

The first time these two teams played this year, in week five, Central Catholic had a 17-10 lead going into halftime.

VC would respond by scoring 34 points in the second half to win the game 44-31.

Mike Campbell would lead the way for VC with 177 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns.

Quarterback Brennan Gallet didn’t play his best game.

Gallet went eight of 20 for 195 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw three interceptions.

On the other side of the ball Nicholas Case, quarterback for Central Catholic had one of his best games on the year.

Case was 28 of 49 for 358 yards and two touchdowns.

He also threw two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown by Tristin Kelly.

That was all week five though, and this is going to be a different game.

The playoffs always bring something special out in all the teams that play.

“It is always harder to beat a team the second time around,” Vermilion Catholic Head Coach Russell Kuhns said. “They (Central Catholic) are a good football team and they played us tough last time, so this time is only going to be that much tougher.”

Coach David Fuhrer’s, of the Central Catholic Eagles, remarks on the game resembled those of coach Kuhns.

“We are going to have to come out and play our game,” Fuhrer said. “That’s a good squad over there at VC and we know they will give us everything they have.”

If VC is going to give Central everything it has, it’s going to have to play a much better game than they did last time, according to Kuhns.

“We are going to have play better on both sides of the ball,” Kuhns said. “They are a good football team and if we want to win, we are going to have to limit our mistakes and turnovers.”

Along with this being a playoff game it is also a rivalry game, which means that all records can be defenestrated.

“It’s going to be a good game,” Fuhrer said. “It’s a rivalry game and a playoff game, so there is going to be a little extra in the tank for both teams.”

The week five match-up against VC game was a catalyst for Central Catholic and spring boarded them in to playing better football.

Central came into the game with a 0-4 record and after the loss to VC they finished the second half of the season with a 4-1 record, and ended the year with a 4-6 record, good enough for the 16th spot in the power rankings.

“I don’t know if we snuck up on them or what,” Fuhrer said. “We thought we had a good football team headed into the season, and we were in almost every game, but for some reason it just seemed to click after the VC game.”

Central Catholic is also coming off of a home shellacking over St. Martins Episcopal, 49-0 in the first round of the playoffs.

One thing coach Kuhns has been coaching his team up about is stopping quarterback Nicholas Case.

“He is a good player,” Kuhns said. “He burned us last time and played a great game. That’s one thing we have been working on is trying to stop him (Case).”

For VC to win its going to need a big game from its leaders.

Gallet leads the way with 2,089 yards passing and 24 touchdowns.

The recipient of most of throws from Gallet is Connar Menard who has 60 catches for 1,038 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Menard’s 1,038 receiving yards is the VC record for most receiving yards in a season.

Mike Campbell leads the ground game with 1,307 rushing yards on 149 carries with 24 touchdowns.

Central Catholic brings a host of great players with them.

Nicholas Case has 1,559 passing yards, with 18 touchdowns.

Leading the way on the ground for Central is Stefano Guarisco, who has 1,053 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Guarisco also has 575 receiving yards and five touchdown catches.

The second round match-up will be held at Vermilion 7p.m.
