Pirates’ accomplishments relished

A.J. Perro is a three-year starter in the Kaplan Pirates defensive backfield.

As a sophomore, he started at free safety and has since worked his way over to strong safety for his senior season.

He understands the history of Kaplan Pirate football and how important it is to the community.

“Coming into the season, I was worried about letting the community down,” said Perro. “They support us so much. They are there every Friday night cheering us on. I feel so special to be on a team that has accomplished something that hasn’t been done in so long. I get goose bumps just thinking about it.”

Friday night, Perro and his teammates travel north to Union Parish for the quarterfinal round of the 3A football state playoffs.

The Pirates have not been to the quarterfinals since 1985. A city pep rally is scheduled for Wednesday in Turnley Park.

“If we can win Friday, the effect on the community would be huge,” continued Perro. “We would be at home for the semifinals with a chance to go to the Dome. To do something that’s never been done before in Kaplan
history would be awesome for us and the community.”

As for Kaplan’s opponent Friday, Perro believes they will present a tough challenge.

“We will have to come out and play our best football,” said Perro. “We can’t just show up and beat them. They are very talented and athletic.”

Perro is a quiet kid, and admits he lets his play do his talking. He prefers to lead his teammates by example.

“I’m not much of a motivational speaker,” he said. “I try to go out and make plays to lead my team. If I can make a play on the ball or deliver a hard hit, that really sets the tone for our defense.”

Kaplan head coach Stephen Lotief echoed Perro when he talked about his leadership and value to the team.

“He’s a very hard working, very selfless kid,” said Lotief. “He leads with his actions and has been a big part of our success.”

Perro credits his grandmother with raising him and making him into a successful person.

“She’s had me since I was six months old,” Perro said. “Words cannot describe how much she means to me. She has been there for me every step of the way. I just want to make her proud.”

After graduation, Perro plans to join the Navy and become an aviation mechanic.

He sports a 3.2 grade point average..

He is very aware that Friday could be his last game as a Kaplan Pirate football player.

“I’ve been leaving it all out on the field,” he said. “Every week could be my last. I’m not thinking about anything but giving it my all every play I’m out there.”

“I’m constantly watching film,” he continued. “I have to be focused and keep it all straight. Sleep is a second option right now. Friday, we will give it everything we have to make the community proud.”

Perro was also named as one of the defensive players of the week for his performance during the 46-6 beat down of the Mansfield Wolverines, during the first round playoff matchup.
