LCA shuts out Gueydan Friday night
The Gueydan Bears fell to Lafayette Christian Academy at home on Friday note, dropping to 0-8 on the season in a 36-0 loss to the Knights.
Their opponents, who are playing in their first season as members of the LHSAA, made school history by winning their first district game. Both teams were winless in district play, sitting at the bottom of the district rankings.
The Bears have one more challenge left, a tough Central Catholic team in Morgan City, who is looking to bounce back after a loss to Country Day on Friday afternoon.
The Bears have sturggled throughout the season with very little in the way of a field leader. Last year, the team celebrated a running back in Trevor Derouen who helped carry the team in many ways.
This year, the Bears are led by three seniors, but are without a standout player like Derouen. Not having a solid player like Derouen is a rare occurrence, according to Gueydan’s head coach, Jay Landry. The school has usually been able to do relatively well with one player who can play both ways and do it well. But this year, small numbers and a lot of inexperience in the youth that came out make it more difficult. But, Landry holds out hope, given that the freshmen and sophomores playing as starters now will be able to make a big difference in the next few years as they grow and get experience on the field.
“You can’t simulate that Friday night experience,” Landry said. “The best way to prepare for it is to play it.”
The Bears’ game against Central Catholic will be in Morgan City on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., with the game closing out the regular season.
