Lady Eagles overpower Lady Bobcats
The Vermilion Catholic Lady Eagles were just too much for the Erath Lady Bobcats, winning by the final score of 34-14.
“We played really well defensively,” Lady Eagles Head Coach Kim Guidry said. “We decided to switch up the kind of defense we play because we felt we were a little bigger and rebounding would be easier for us. The team did a great job playing a new style of defense. I’m really proud of that.”
The Lady Eagles got up early and never relinquished the lead.
In the first quarter the Lady Eagles, led by the defense, scored 10 points and only allowed the Lady Bobcats three.
The second quarter was much of the same with VC adding 10 more points, and holding the Lady Bobcats to only six. Giving the Lady Eagles the 20-9 halftime lead.
The defense that played so well according to coach Guidry performed flawlessly in the third quarter. The defense for VC allowed the Lady Bobcats to score zero points in the third quarter. The Lady Eagles, however, only added four to its point total. In the fourth quarter the Lady Eagles offense started clicking again by adding 10 more to give it 34 for the game. Erath only managed to score five points in the second half, all in the fourth quarter.
“I think our defense played great,” Lady Bobcats Andrea Bernard said. “We held VC to under 40 points. We did everything I wanted us to do defensively. Just offense is our thorn.”
Coach Bernard went on to say that her team was getting open looks, but they just could not convert on the open looks.
“It has been our problem all year,” Bernard said. “We get open shots, we just can’t make them, and I don’t know if it is a mental thing or a physical thing. We shoot in practice, but you can never shoot enough. I have challenged the girls to do some more shooting outside of practice, and hopefully they will because that’s the only way our offense is going to get better, practice.”
Leading the way for the Lady Bobcats was Gabby Harrington, who had a team high five points. Also scoring for Erath was Jasmine Lajune with four, Sydney Richardelle with three and Alexis Harrington with two.
The Lady Eagles were missing arguably its best player in Katie Frith, who was held out of the game as a precaution because of a concussion she received in an earlier game this year.
So without one of its best players, the Lady Eagles needed someone to step up and Ashailee Brailey did just that, leading the team in scoring with 15 points.
“With Katie (Frith) out we needed someone to step up and Ashailee did just that,” Guidry said. “I am glad that she was able to step up like that, but at the same time I believe that everyone needs to be a shooter and tonight it was her.”
Kaylen Collins was right behind Brailey in scoring with nine points. Kelly White and Ellen Langlinais each added four points, and Lex Langlinais rounded out the scoring for the Lady Eagles with two points.
With this win, the Lady Eagles move to a perfect 6-0 on the season, and the Lady Bobcats fall to 4-2.
Next on the schedule for Lady Eagles is the Acadiana Tournament that starts tomorrow night and runs through Saturday.
The Lady Bobcats have Teurlings up next, this Friday night. That game will be held at the Erath Gym. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
