Gueydan boys suffer tough loss in opener

Losing is always hard for any athlete in any sport, but losing the first game seems to hurt just a bit more. The Gueydan Bears know this feeling losing to Iota by the final of 65-38.

The Bears had a lead over Iota at the end of the first quarter of 14-12, but after that it was all down hill according to head coach Paul Saparito.

“We had it going in the first quarter,” Saparito said. “After that we just couldn’t get anything going, but we have a really young squad. So that is kind of expected.”

Young may be an understatement for the Bears. Tuesday night the Bears dressed and played seventh and eight graders. The team only has one senior on the roster.

Despite all the youth coach Saparito is excited about the future of the team.

“It’s going to take a little bit to get everyone where they are supposed to be, but in a few years they will have all kinds of experience. That is something to look forward too.”

Coach Saparito also went on to say that he also enjoys the thought of having to coach this team. He said it gives him a good chance to teach the sport which is always exciting.

Leading the way against Iota was Nick Boudreaux who scored 12 points. Cade Sonnier was second on the team with 11 points scored.

Colton Woods, Casin Reed and Malik Criner each scored four.

This also was the Bears first time on the court as a team. They didn’t play in any exhibition games or jamborees.

Geuydan’s next game is Monday against Church Point.
