F.I.E.B. wins three against Delcambre

FORKED ISLAND - The Forked Island – E. Broussard Eagles scored three wins in junior high basketball against the Delcambre Panthers.

The eighth grade boys thrilled the large home crowd as they eked out a 27-23 victory, their first of the young season. Eagles’ team captain William Broussard of Pecan Island felt good about the way his team played.

“We knew they were bigger than us coming in,” he said. “We couldn’t settle for outside shots. We needed to penetrate and draw fouls. The team did a really good job of that and we’re happy to get our first win.”

The game went back and forth until Kade Harrington stepped to the free throw line and made five consecutive free throws in the final minutes to put the Eagles on top.

“We don’t have football, so we start early to give the kids something to do,” said long-time Eagles coach Lynn Broussard. “We’ve been at it for 12 weeks. I am happy for them. We made seven out of 10 free throws. That
was the difference in the game.”

Harrington led the Eagles with nine points. Broussard and Beau Mathews each had six.

McKenzie Jackson paced the Panthers with eight points. Lane Broussard and Tyrese Green each chipped in six points.

The Lady Eagles’ eighth grade team also earned a win, defeating the Panthers 29-21.

Annemarie Broussard scored 12 points, including 4-4 at the free throw line to lead the Lady Eagles. Rylie Frick added eight.

Taya Lewis scored eight points for Delcambre. Heidi Miener added five.

The Eagles seventh grade team used a 12-2 opening quarter to down the Panthers 39-23.

Drake Abshire led the Eagles’ attack with 14 points. Noah Gaspard added seven.

Colt Dodey led all scorers for the night as he tallied 20 for the Panthers. The rest of Delcambre’s points went to Katom Miguez when he nailed a 3-pointer in the third quarter.

Delcambre earned their only win of the night when the seventh grade girls defeated the Lady Eagles 23-18. The Lady Panthers outscored F.I.E.B. 8-0 in the third period to pull ahead.

Cheyenne Dunn scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half to lead the Lady Panthers.
